What Is MeRT? An Overview of Magnetic eResonance Therapy

Just like functional medicine is a revolutionary way of treating chronic conditions, MeRT is a groundbreaking, inventive way to treat mental health problems and inadequacies of the brain. Magnetic eResonance Therapy doesn’t just aim to eradicate symptoms of common neurological issues. Rather, it addresses the root cause: the brain itself.

Tri-Cities Functional Medicine in Tennessee has recently added MeRT treatment to its offerings. With this new technology in our wheelhouse, we are able to effectively address issues like PTSD, autism, depression, anxiety, insomnia, brain optimization and more with a personalized treatment that targets disruptions in the brain.

What Is MeRT Treatment?

Simply put, MeRT is a four-step process that uses magnetic waves to stimulate specific areas of the brain and, therefore, improve its function. The premise behind this treatment is that every person’s brain is unique, and that by gathering advanced diagnostics on each individual’s’ brain activity, it is possible to create a tailored plan to help with a wide variety of neurological issues and inefficiencies.

Here is what the MeRT process is like:

Step One: Brain Mapping

To understand your brain’s function, we first take a qEEG to measure your brain wave frequencies for 10 minutes. This is a noninvasive process that measures brain electrical activity by placing a cap on your head that is connected to EEG equipment. We’ll ask you to relax and try to sit still while alternating between opening and closing your eyes. We’ll also conduct an EKG test to measure your heart rate and see how effectively your brain and heart are communicating.

Step Two: Analysis

We’ll then analyze data from your qEEG and EKG to create an accurate map of your brain. This map will visually show activity in your brain using different colors to represent different types of brain waves. We can then analyze this data to help identify which areas of your brain are functioning abnormally and diagnose certain issues with your brain, such as:

  • PTSD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Autism
  • Insomnia
  • Seizures
  • Epilepsy
  • ADHD

This brain map also identifies other cognitive difficulties you may be having, such as brain fog, poor memory, emotional regulation issues, chronic stress, and attention problems. With these records of your unique brain, we then develop a treatment protocol that addresses neurological issues specific to you.

Step Three: MeRT Treatment

With a plan in place, we can begin administering treatment. A full treatment course typically takes four to six weeks with five 45-minute sessions each week. Like the initial qEEG recording, MeRT is a relaxing, noninvasive process. We’ll have you sit down and get as comfortable as possible. Then we’ll use a magnetic coil to stimulate specific areas of your brain for six- to eight-second intervals.

Step Four: Progress Evaluation

MeRT is a process that takes time to see results. We’ll monitor your progress along the way by taking a new qEEG and EKG recording every ten treatments. We do this to make sure your original treatment protocol is creating positive results. If we notice something isn’t working, we’ll make modifications.

Is MeRT Therapy Effective?

MeRT is a specialized type of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). While the brain is a highly complicated organ that researchers are constantly seeking to understand, there is significant evidence that brain cell communication is a significant cause for many neurological issues, including depression.

To understand how this works, let’s do a quick neuroscience 101 review. The brain is made up of about 100 billion neurons that communicate with each other through sending chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurons are connected to each other by synapses.

This communication system is delivered through an electrical network of signals that carry information from neuron to neuron via a pathway of small fibres. If you reach far back into your memories from your school years, you may remember the fun fact that your brain actually generates so much electricity it could power a lightbulb.

Disruptions or abnormalities with your brain’s communication system can contribute to common brain disorders and inefficiencies. While genetics are one possible cause of issues with neuron communication, your environment, emotions, and behaviors can all cause disruptions. For instance, suffering a traumatic brain injury in sports, consistently not getting enough sleep, living with chronic stress, or living through a traumatic life event can negatively affect your brain’s communication system.

TMS is an effective way to stimulate these areas where communication is poor and improve their functioning. MeRT takes this technology to the next level by applying magnetic stimulation to exactly the right spots using a detailed, personalized brain map. Wave Neuro, the innovative company behind MeRT, has documented its success in treating several cognitive and mental health issues.

Autism

Individuals with autism typically have reduced alpha EEG coherence in the brain’s frontal regions and connectivity issues in the frontal lobe. A qEEG may pick up high Beta wave frequencies and slow delta and theta wave activity. While treatment is unique to the individual, a treatment protocol for autism often includes stimulating areas in the front of the brain to improve social behaviors, speech, eye contact, sleep patterns, and more.

Wave Neuro and the Brain Treatment Center released results from a study on using MeRT for Autism which showed that 66% of individuals saw improvements verbal non-verbal communication and 70% of individuals had improved eye contact.

PTSD

People with PTSD often have brainwave disruptions in the front of the brain, including two competing alpha frequencies, instead of one strong alpha frequency, and slow rolling delta and theta waves. MeRT therapy can help reduce this competing alpha brainwave activity and help enhance emotional stability, improve memory and cognitive processing, and more.

A double-blind study found MeRT resulted in a 62% reduction in PCL-M scores for patients, which is a military diagnostic test used to measure symptoms of PTSD.

Depression

There has been significant scientific evidence and anecdotal support for TMS helping with depression. People with depression often show asymmetrical brain activity across the brain’s left and right hemispheres. The goal of MeRT therapy is to help balance brain waves across the left and right frontal hemispheres of the brain.

One Brain Treatment Center patient reported their feelings of depression decreasing after less than two weeks of MeRT Treatment and another patient reported they were living “depression-free” without medication after a month of MeRT.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

MeRT is a powerful aid in sports recovery. Impact sports can take a significant toll on the brain, and range in severity. TBI can cause long-term effects, including cognitive issues, emotional dysregulation, memory problems, low energy, and sleep issues. MeRT can target areas of the brain that have been injured and help address these problems.

MeRT can be used as a diagnostic and evaluative tool for athletes who are recovering from past injuries or seeking to enhance their cognitive performance to help them compete at their best.
